Jack,

I even doubt that a essay answer would be sufficient as you not only should meet the required specification and get a correct result, but IMHO the best programs will not be written to advanced nor to basic for the general programming team at that company and/or division. Thus any multiple choice question would be a poor measure and an essay would simply take too much information that a intervieweeeee would not have. However, I guess one could phrase the essay question in such away that you could factor out the skill set of the existing team and have it focus on how would you solve this problem and why did you take that approach versus another.

Only essay questions will work.

If they're going to be using base SAS, I'd start with "Explain the _TYPE_ variable in PROC SUMMARY, the LAG function in the data step, and the COLUMNS statement in PROC REPORT." For the COLUMNS statement, you might substitute the TABLES statement in PROC TABULATE or the FILE statement in the data step. I could easily talk for 10 minutes on any of those subjects without repeating myself or exhausting the topic.
