Thanks to Paul Choate pointing me in the right direction, I finally figured out that I was reading a different sas dataset than my student was reading. Once I did a proc contents on the dataset that he was reading, I found out that his dataset had "living" as both a variable and a format. I see that more instruction is in order.... for both of us.
