Dealing with certain data constructs that require recursive joins to flatten or 'get to the bottom'. One arena is Bill of Materials (BOM) expansion. While doable in SAS, it's not the prettiest or most efficient. See http://five.pairlist.net/pipermail/oracle-article/2003/000002.html for some talk of Oracle's STARTING and CONNECTING SQL clauses.
