When you do qa select if by the menu, there is the option of deleting cases for good, or just filtering them out temporarily. The default option is filter. So unless you specify the opposite, SPSS by default introduces a filter operation. It does not uses the TEMPORARY command in that situation, because TEMPORARY is valid only until the next procedure that needs to read the data, whereas filter is in place until you order it off.
