I'm not sure whether you meant by 'direct and database marketing' or the generic data-mining field.

The former is the targeted programming for specific industries marketing to subscribers such as financial (i.e., issuing credit cards), publishing (direct mail subscriptions). There are books and resources for such purposes, example:

Our data sources are huge in volume. We apply all kinds of statistics related to market research including data-mining, and heavily rely on logistic regression for modeling.

In any case, you need to know both SAS and statistics before anything.

There is more available to read than you could possibly have time to read.

But reading is no substitute for hands-on experience.

If you do not have access to SAS software, consider buying a copy of the SAS Learning Edition.
