Hey folks,
Hope you are fine.
Here are some notes on birds recorded in South Georgia. It's a mix of
current birds, a few "left-overs" from the summer, and reports from
friends. All sightings are by myself unless otherwise noted.
WILD TURKEY: Charlton Co. (GA Highway #252 just west of Satilla River):
2 hens seen on 10/7
NORTHERN BOBWHITE: Tattnall Co. (just e. off GA Highway #121): 1 heard
on 7/21
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN: Glynn Co. (U.S. Highway #82 just west of the
Jekyll Island Causeway): 3 seen soaring on 8/18
SWALLOW-TAILED KITE: Ware Co. (GA #122, east of Mile Marker 1 near
Ware/Clinch Co. line); Joy Campbell reported seeing a group of 12
circling over a field at 8:25 a.m. as she was driving from Waycross to
Cogdell.
MISSISSIPPI KITE: Tattnall Co. (n. of Reidsville)-- 1 Adult seen on
7/21; Tattnall Co. (between Collins & Reidsville on GA Hwy #121)--3
Adults seen hunting together on 7/21; Waycross, Ware Co. (east section
#1)--1 Adult seen 8/17; Waycross, Ware Co. (east section #2)--1 Adult
seen 8/18
BALD EAGLE: Camden Co. (n. of Waverly)--1 immature flying west on 10/7
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK: Jekyll Island, Glynn Co.-- 1 Adult flushed 8/18
from small interior pond north of the vegetation landfill (w/ Lydia
Thompson)
SANDHILL CRANE: Jekyll Island, Glynn Co.-- Rebecca Schapansky related
that on 9/25 she and members of the Duval Co., FL Audubon Society
noticed a flock of approximately 15 birds circling & then flying south
over the Jekyll Island Banding Station. This is noteworthy for the
number (15), time (Sept.), & area (barrier island).
GRAY KINGBIRD: Jekyll Island, Glynn Co.-- 1 seen 7/31 at the Shopping
Center; a pair seen 7/31 at Blackbeard's Restaurant (total of 3
separate birds that date); 1 seen again on 8/18 at Blackbeard's
Restaurant...thus, with other past sightings this makes a minimum of 2
pairs I've seen using Jekyll Island the summer of 2005.
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE: Tattnall Co. (Metter & s. of Collins, on GA Hwy
#121)--1 each location seen on 7/21
RED-EYED VIREO: Waycross, Ware Co. (my "old" backyard)-- One migrant
seen 10/3.
WOOD THRUSH: Waycross, Ware Co. (my "old" backyard)-- my resident birds
continued to sing regularly throughout the summer until 8/8. A lone late
bird was seen at my birdbath on 10/20.
AMERICAN REDSTART: Waycross, Ware Co. (my "old" backyard)-- A female was
seen 10/3.
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK: Waycross, Ware Co. (my "old" backyard)-- A
single female was seen 10/21.
BLUE GROSBEAK: Tattnall Co. (just e. off GA Hwy #121)--1 seen & heard on
7/21
INDIGO BUNTING: Tattnall Co. (on GA Hwy #121)-- 1 heard on 7/21
EASTERN MEADOWLARK: Tattnall Co. (just e. off GA Hwy #121)--1 singing &
flying on 7/21
Take care.
Sincerely,
Sheila Willis
