Yesterday, Bill Lotz, Dan Vickers, Steve Barlow and I tried our luck at finding some early moving gulls at a couple of the western lakes. We did not have much luck with gulls but had a pretty good day overall. The morning started at West Point Dam, just as the sun was rising. We were greeted by several immature BALD EAGLES as we set up our scopes. We had a total of five in the next hour or so. There were no gulls to be found, either on the main lake or below the dam. We did have a few COMMON LOON and a distant duck, most likely a Scaup sp., other than that very quiet. We headed down to Walter F. George to try our luck. We had similar results to West Point. A group of five HERRING GULL and a few RING-BILLED GULLS in the distance, a couple of Common Loons, and several flyby Bald Eagles. There were a good number of Tree Swallows and one Northern Rough-winged Swallow on the Alabama side of the dam. Below the dam, we had four SPOTTED SANDPIPER and three LEAST SANDPIPERS.
Our final stop of the day was at the Bradley Unit of the Eufala NWR. The fields are in great shape for sparrows and we managed to find seven species, including great looks at two LECONTE'S SPARROWS. There were also four WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, VESPER (3), SONG, SWAMP and SAVANNAH were very numerous. We also heard two KING RAIL calling. We flushed several WILSON'S SNIPE. There were a good number of SEDGE WRENS along the dikes. We had a singles of BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and EASTERN SCREECH-OWL. Duckwise, we had a few mixed flocks that included GREEN-WINGED TEAL, WOOD DUCK, MALLARD, GADWALL, RING-NECKED DUCK and NORTHERN PINTAIL.
It turned out to be a beautiful day to be in the field, with some great birding.
