Yeah, CRO's are a great way of breaking in. You gain a lot of experience at CRO's (study-wise) as each programmer is on more than one active study. The other way is to see if you can join one of the small pharmaceuticals as an entry level programmer. Again, they'll work you like a dog but it is great experience.

find a large CRO and try to get an entry level programming position. they'll work you like a dog, but you'll gain invaluable experience. good luck
