Augusta-Aiken Audubon (www.augustaaikenaudubon.org) had a field trip this
morning to Merry Bros. Brickyard Ponds. We first walked in from the paved
road into the old ponds on the right. In the back pond, in a large flock of
Canada Geese was a Greater White Fronted Goose. This is the same pond we
had one in during the winter of 03/04.
In the shallower expressway pond we had 6 Redhead ducks as well as some
Ruddy Ducks and several hundred Ring-necked Ducks.
We had 4 Bonaparte's Gulls fly over as well.
Other highlights:
An adult Bald Eagle snatching a meal from an immature Bald Eagle and
plucking it while perched on top of a snag.
Ring-necked Ducks (hundreds), Widgeon, Gadwall, Shovelers, Bufflehead, Scaup
and Hooded Mergansers. Also a couple of dozen Ring-billed Gulls and one
Greater Yellowlegs.
The trucks were running today and they were working fairly close to the road
so we did not get into the back to see if there's anything in that last
pond.
