I use vi.

On the downside vi takes some time to learn compared to most text editors. (Most text editors don't take any time to learn).

On the upside vi is already installed on almost any unix system. The time it takes to lean vi (a few hours at the most) might be less than the time it could take to get IT to install another text editor. And I'd rather learn a new language than fill out a business case for new software :-) For a short term contract you could find the ability to use whatever is pre-installed is important.
