I received some posts, off line, asking how I prepared the unofficial year-
end review. I presume it was very similar to how Ron and Howard
accomplish the task each year. People were most interested in why the
numbers were different than what a Google search reports.
Since so many posts haven't made it to Google this year, I downloaded all
of the posts from the listserv.
Don't do the following unless you care to use up about 60mb from your
email account and hard drive.
That said, if one sends an email to listserv@listserv.uga.edu, with the
subject 'get sas-l', and with the body of the email containing get
statements for every file you want. For example,
GET SAS-L LOG0501A
GET SAS-L LOG0501B
etc.
The names are in the form of yymm with A, B, C, D and E representing the
weeks. This year there were five weekly files for each month, except
February, which had four. In 2004, every month had five files.
My SAS code for analyzing the file is too long to include here, but I'd be
glad to share it if you send me a request off-line. The code was used to
parse the downloaded files into a record for each posting, and captured
the subject, sender and content. Since so many of us use multiple email
addresses, most of the code attempts to standardize the addresses.
The code does not attempt to evaluate content. The decision rule I used
for determining who was a rookie was manual. I put together a spreadsheet
showing postings for both 2004 and 2005 and, if anyone had a lot of 2005
posts but few or none for 2004, I searched Howard's list to see if they
were on it.
Howard posted info about his list project a couple of year's ago, namely:
http://www.howles.com/sas-l/

Upon reviewing the list since I posted it, I noticed that I had not
included Excel-Hari on the Rookie list, but should have. There are likely
others that were inadvertently ommitted, as well, and if you let me know
I'll be glad to update the summary.
And, while I only included the top 15 old-timer and top 15 rookie posters,
I noticed that Ron's summaries had always included the top 50. Thus, to
make up for that ommission, here is a list of the top 100. My appologies,
in advance, for over intruding on anyone's printer or bandwidth.
