If you have string variables defined with a width of 8 characters or greater, they are considered long string variables and will not appear in the variable list. If you change the variable widths to 7 or less, they will appear in the list.

Hi everyone Thanks for the replies, but the problem is not in opening SPSS files or entering data. Its with the Analyse command, it is active but whatever analysis I choose, I always get he same message

"All variables in the working file or in the sets in use are

inappropriate for this dialogue box"

Then if I click OK there are no variables in the dialogue box

I tried changing the variables from strings to scale, etc.. but it didnot work,

I tried to open the embeded files in the SPSS folder also but with

the same problem?

I feel that there is something with the program itself or the installation

Probably some files that had to be installed?
