Hi Folks,

The Georgia Important Bird Areas Program is dedicating Pine Mt. Ridge as an Important Bird Area (IBA) on Saturday, May 6th.

Pine Mt. Ridge includes Callaway Gardens and FD Roosevelt State Park.

The dedication ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at the Discovery Center at Callaway Gardens. Terry Johnson, Cindy Reittinger, and Cory Croft will be speakers. Dr. Bill Birkhead will be our Master or Ceremonies. There will be a raptor show before the dedication starting at 10:30 a.m., a bird walk at FDR State Park at 8 a.m., and presentations on birds during the afternoon (check out their website for details http://gastateparks.org/info/fdr/). The ceremony is open to the public and there will be no charge at the entrance into Callaway Gardens to attend it (just tell the gate person what you are there for). Directions can be found at Callaway's website (http://www.callawaygardens.com/).

The Pine Mt. Ridge area is the southernmost tip of the Appalachian Mountains so it is a significance starting point in Spring or end point in Fall for migratory birds using this mountain chain in their travels. It is also one of the most southern breeding locations for Worm-eating Warblers and Scarlet Tanagers.

Please join us to celebrate this area as an IBA.

Jim Wilson Georgia IBA Coordinator Conyers, GA 770-602-1679
