David,

These are some references that I have used.

The following two helped me understand the process behind CATREG, that is, an alternating least squares/optimal scaling process. Young, F. W., J. De Leeuw, and Y. Takane. 1976. Regression with Qualitative and Quantitative Variables: An Alternating Least Squares Method with Optimal Scaling Features. Psychometrika 41: 505-28.

Young, F. W. 1981. Quantitative Analysis of Qualitative Data. Psychometrika 46: 357-87.

The following are more general relating to the area of categorical analysis and may not specifically cover CATREG, however, they may help you understand some of the concepts. Gifi, A. 1990. A Nonlinear Multivariate Analysis. Chichester, England: John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Van de Geer, John P. 1993a. Multivariate Analysis of Categorical Data: Theory. Newbury Park, California: Sage Publications.

Van de Geer, John P. 1993b. Multivariate Analysis of Categorical Data: Applications. Newbury Park, California: Sage Publications.

Unfortunately, a search for CATREG on the web has never provided a lot of useful references because CATREG and categorical regression are used to describe several methodologies.

The Data Theory Group in the Netherlands has been a focal point for work in this area. Their web site is: http://www.datatheory.nl/index.html. Hopefully someone from that group will respond with better/more pertinent references.

I used CATREG function of SPSS in my analysis. I need a reference source for CATREG in SPSS and interpretation of quantification numbers as well as Betas in regression output, in order to explain my results to reviewers who did not use it before. I was asked to provide more details than hose already exist in SPSS help files. Can anyone help me on this matter?

Regards

David
