This is looking like a very good year for my WOOD DUCKS!
I have already had two boxes hatch for a total of 26 ducklings. I have another box with a total of 12 eggs due to hatch next week.
I have noticed this past week that there have been at least two males and one female at the pond. I assumed that the lone male was the mate of the female incubating. I also have seen a second female enter the other two nesting boxes. So now I must have two other pair coming to the pond.
I checked the other two boxes this afternoon which are located at different ends of the pond and I am happy to report that BOTH BOXES have eggs. One box to the right of the dock has 3 EGGS - the other box close to the dam has 7 EGGS.
Yesterday I wanted to check a nesting box on a large pine tree. I knew there were babies but I didn't know what kind.
I put up a small step ladder - opened the lid - WOW! out popped a fully feathered baby Tufted Titmouse! It flew down on the ground. I picked it up and was attempting to put it back in the box when another one jumped out. I poked the first one back in the box, retrieved the second one. As I bent over to get the second one - a third one flew out - landed on the back of my neck and crawled up under my hair. My first thought - I HOPE NO ONE IS WATCHING THIS!!!!. I put the second baby back in the box, got the third one out of my hair and placed it in the box. I quickly shut the lid, grabbed my step ladder and ran for the house! Guess that was what I deserved for being "nosey"!(Hope I don't see myself on America's Funniest Videos!)
