Subject: Re: Blue-winged Warblers - Coosawattee WMA
I found another Blue-winged Warbler this morning while birding a different
location of the Coosawattee WMA in southern Murray County. This is the
fourth location where they've been encountered since May 15th. This area
is also off of Cagle Rd. in DeLorme 13 F-9. The spot where the bird was
singing is about two miles walk past the gated road. This gated road is
exactly two miles east of where Cagle and Maple Grove Church Rd. join. It
is on the left(north) side of Cagle. This walk leads one through a variety
of habitats. It starts out in a regenerating clearcut, early successional
scrub with sporadic trees. It continues like this for almost two miles
then it becomes thicker near a wooded swamp. This swamp looks to have been
created by some beaver dams on a small branch that eventually runs into
Holly Creek. After this it changes into a thick pine forest, but not a
very old one. Maybe ten years or so. The BWWA was found about 100 yards
southeast of the swamp in a portion that is somewhat similar to the other
three areas where they have been found. For the most part the pines are a
little thicker and taller here. I birded the area for about four hours. I
had 48 species in all.
Highlights include:
Great Blue Heron
Green Heron
Wood Duck
Red-headed Woodpecker - 2
Brown-headed Nuthatch - several fledged young
MARSH WREN
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - fledged young
BLUE-WINGED WARBLER
Pine Warbler - fledged young
Prairie Warbler - nest with young
Black-and-white Warbler
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER
Louisiana Waterthrush
Kentucky Warbler
Hooded Warbler
Field Sparrow - carrying food
Northern Cardinal - nest w/ young
The Prothonotary Warbler was at the swamp. He looked to be on territory,
just singing and flying form one perch to another. I never did observe any
other individuals while I was there. The swamp has plenty of dead snags
for cavity-nesters.
