This morning's field trip participants were treated to great looks at 2 ANHINGA soaring around the backside of the Shamrock reservoir. We were behind the Shamrock treeline in a non-public area, but the birds should have also been visible from the Shamrock side. The only other time I've had this species here was May 1996, when there was a single bird moving between the Shamrock and Blalock reservoirs. The species count this morning was 54, with the best birds listed below.

Pied-billed Grebe-4 Anhinga-2 Green Heron-3 Common Moorhen-7 Spotted Sandpiper-1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo-2 Ruby-throated Hummingbird Pileated Woodpecker-2 (male feeding the female) Acadian Flycatcher Great-crested Flycatcher Eastern Kingbird White-eyed Vireo Yellow-throated Vireo Tree Swallow N. Rough-winged Swallow Barn Swallow Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Wood Thrush Northern Parula Yellow-breasted Chat Eastern Meadowlark

The Shamrock and Blalock reservoirs are open to the public 7am-8pm. If you stay longer than 30 minutes, you must purchase a parking pass for $5 per vehicle (please be sure to write "Birder" on the ticket stub).
