If Ken or anyone has any further information about the Sandhill Crane that he spotted with the leg problem in Bartow County, please send it along to Kim Kilgore, who rehabs birds at the Arrowhead EE Center in Armuchee. Her email is below or she may be reachable at 706-295-6041. Thanks.

Carol, I will see what I can try to do for the SH Crane. Can you get more specific directions and was that seen on Friday? He may be gone by now. Can the person who spotted him check to see if he is still there before we go any further. I do not know who is available to check into it and I am teaching a workshop the next two days but can get the bird vet help and have housing available if we can capture him. Of course if he can fly then nature will have to take its course.... Kim

Please respond to Ken Blankenship <kenhblankenship@ COMCAST.NET>

Today we took a little tour of Bartow County. We found a Sandhill Crane in the pond on Floyd Creek Church Road that we are concerned about. It has a strange, huge growth on one of its legs - it is larger than a softball. I imagine that is why it is only arriving here now. If there is anything that can be done, feel free to let me know who to contact or please forward this to them. We did NOT see the Glossy Ibis reported recently at this location.

Taff Rd. = TR; Brandon Farm Rd. = BFR; Pine Log WMA = PLWMA

Broad-winged Hawk 1 Lesser Yellowlegs 4 BFR/TR Solitary Sandpiper 3 BFR/TR SPOTTED SANDPIPER 1 BFR Least Sandpiper 2 TR Eurasian Collared Dove Cliff Swallow 5-6 BFR (never seen them here before) CAPE MAY WARBLER 1m PLWMA Yellow-rumped Warbler Black-throated Green Warbler 2 PLWMA Pine Warbler Prairie Warbler PLWMA Palm Warbler Black-and-white Warbler Common Yellowthroat Hooded Warbler 2 PLWMA Yellow-breasted Chat 1 PLWMA Summer Tanager Savannah Sparrow 1 PLWMA Grasshopper Sparrow 5-6 BFR/TR Blue Grosbeak 1 BFR BOBOLINK 50+ (big flock just down the road directly across Hwy 113 from Brandon Farm Rd, in a field on the left)

Yesterday (Friday 4/28) we took a walk through Cochran Shoals. No heron nest this year, nor prothonotary warblers on the boardwalk. Highlights: Wood Duck 3 Green Heron 1 Yellow-crowned Night Heron 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO 1 Red-headed Woodpecker 1 Palm Warbler (tons!) Swamp Sparrow 2

A "low light" at Cochran Shoals was finding two Northern Cardinal parents sadly and persistently chipping (to no avail) at a black rat snake in a little cedar tree. Sure enough, I went over and their nest was empty and the snake had bulges in its belly. I pestered him with a stick so that he went on his way but I felt bad - hope they have another brood.

Cool butterflies at Pine Log WMA today (4/29): Red-banded Hairstreak, American Lady, Eastern Tailed Blue, Pearly Crescentspot, Zebra Swallowtail, Sleepy Orange.
