What you describe seems to be multiple sessions, which theoretically shouldn't happen if you have one session going and then open any type of SPSS file (.sav, .spo, .sps). I cannot replicate the problem you describe. I can launch multiple sessions by selecting SPSS from the Start menu multiple times, but only actions that launch spsswin.exe should start a new session of SPSS.

Okay, I see multiple data editors, not multiple sessions. However, the fact still remains that when I open up a data file, then three *syntax* (.sps) files via windows explorer, I end up with four data editors open. Each of the syntax files is "associated" or "linked" with each subsequent empty or blank data editor, not the first original data file. When I close each of the blank or empty data editors the associated syntax files close as well.

That being said, is there a way to open an existing single data file and several existing syntax (or .spo output) files, via Windows Explorer or My Computer, without the deluge of blank data editors opening as well?

Thanks.

We recently upgraded to SPSS 14 and, while I generally enjoy the new features, I have discovered one particular annoyance. Each time I open an SPSS file (either .sav, .spo or .sps) through Windows Explorer (or My Computer) a new session of SPSS opens. I eventually end up with multiple sessions running at the same time when I really only need, for example, one session with multiple syntax files open. I know I can open the syntax files via the GUI (File -> Open -> Syntax), but I'd rather use Explorer to save time and effort. Is there a solution or work-around?

Thanks.
