Sat 24 am
Newman Wetland Center (from around 8 am): didn't see anything too
unusual. SUMMER TANAGER and singing PARULA were probably the most
interesting.
Lake Blalock: OSPREYS on nest, ORCHARD ORIOLES, 5 GREEN HERONS (at
least two of which were juveniles) in the small swamp across the
footbridge at r.h. side of parking lot.
Huie: 1 AMERICAN BLACK DUCK plus a couple of possible MALLARD X
AMERICAN BLACK DUCK; there are masses of mallards to search through,
but the decent-looking B Duck was quite easy to find Sat swimming
round in the middle of the first pond you see as you come through the
gate. No shorebirds apart from KILLDEER, as one would expect for the
time of year. 1 GREAT EGRET, a couple of GREEN HERONS, BLUE GROSBEAK,
heard only FIELD SPARROW.
I also did a very quick (not paying the parking fee) check of L
Horton and had GREAT EGRET and a BLACK SWAN (one of the Egrets and
the Swan were seen from the public road that goes right from Antioch
Rd before entrance to the fee area and crosses an arm of the lake.
Cheers
Steve
