For the first time in 7 years, I decided to collect some breeding bird data at
Oxbow Meadows and the Columbus Water Works. I didn't try for Chucks or owls
and I had several glaring misses (Red-eyed Vireo, Wood Thrush, Red-tailed
Hawk, etc) so I ended up with a moderate spp. count of 61, but could probaly
push that into the low/mid 70s with further visits this month. Another "too
bad" note is that the Grasshopper Sparrows (up to 5-6) that were hanging
around for most of May have left, perhaps due to being disturbed by workers
near the dredge pond. Anyway...here are some highlights - nothing
extraordinary, but it was fun to get out!
Canada Goose - 7
Wood Duck - 6
Mallard - 15
Anhinga - 6
Great Blue Heron - 6
Great Egret - 3
Cattle Egret - 3
Little Blue Heron - 6
Green Heron - 6
Red-shouldered Hawk - 2
Broad-winged Hawk - 1
Cooper's Hawk - 2
Mississippi Kite - 60+ (ties OM high count from May 2004)
Common Ground-Dove - 1
Yellow-billed Cuckoo - 3
Great Crested Flycatcher - 7
Prothonotary Warbler - 8 (including a male feeding a fledgling)
Northern Parula - 1
Common Yellowthroat - 5
Summer Tanager - 3
Orchard Oriole - 3
Blue Grosbeak - 8
Indigo Bunting - 10
American Goldfinch - 2
