Subject: Hawk calls
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

I was in a store's parking lot on Monday when I heard a strange sound, which I thought at first might be a child blowing on a toy whistle or horn. But then I located the source, a big hawk sitting on top of a light pole. It was midday and the sun was bright, and I didn't have my binoculars, so I couldn't make out much detail (and I am not very good on hawk id anyway.) It was the right size and general shape for a Red-tailed Hawk. But the sounds were not the typical scream. The calls were three short, loud, shrill, high-pitched notes, repeated every few seconds. I wondered if it could be a young one still hoping to be fed, but it certainly seemed big enough to fend for itself. I wish I could give more detail about its appearance. It did have the streaky band across the breast, but from the back it was just a silhouette, and I couldn't tell much about the tail except it was fairly short and wide. The bird sat there for all of the 20 minutes or so that I was around. I went for my binocs, but it was gone when I got back. I can't find any reference to any such call in books or on the Web. Has anybody heard, or heard of, a hawk making such a sound? Clare Zens LaGrange, GA 30240 czens@thclibrary.net
