Subject: Red-necked Grebe at Strom Thurmond Lake (Columbia County)
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

I paid a brief visit to Strom Thurmond Lake (also known as Clarks Hill Lake) late this afternoon. A Red-necked Grebe, in close to full breeding plumage, was actively diving on the lake near the entrance to the West Dam area. The bird was on the east side as you enter the area (i.e. not the marina side) and came fairly close to the shore at times. Also present were a raft of 8 sleeping Lesser Scaup, and a few Pied-billed Grebes. Gulls were interesting -- I only saw Bonaparte's; not a Ring-bill in sight. Directions to Strom Thurmond Lake are outlined in Giff Beaton's Birding Georgia, on p. 121 (Piedmont Lakes East.) The West Dam access area is off of rte 221. It's the last area on the left before you reach the dam breast and cross over into South Carolina.
