I'm not statistician by trade but I can recommend a decent text to get
you started - was very helpful for me - not advanced/theoretical
material. Kleinbaum and Klein (2005. Survival analysis: self-teaching
text) has some good info including discussion of the PH assumption and
SAS code to get Schoenfeld residuals to test the PH assumption for
each covariate, and then to extend the Cox model if necessary.
There are likelihood-based r-squared stats if you want a familiar
measure of available information explained. hope that helps. SH
