Subject:   Common Loon on Long Pond
Content-Type:   text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed

My wife and I spotted an adult Common Loon on Long Pond (extreme southern Lowndes County, south of Valdosta, two miles or so east of I-75 at Exit 5) about 30 minutes ago. We were out on a test run with our boat and so I didn't have binoculars or a long-lens camera to assist with the ID, but we were able to maneuver within 20 feet of the loon and both of us clearly saw the distinctive profile and speckled back. I had previously seen an adult loon on the same pond for two days in early June, just after Tropical Storm Barry came through. Given the other reports of loons in the state this month, perhaps they are staying a bit later this year?

Julius
