Subject: Important reminders from OIE: Study Abroad and Exchange
The Office of International Education would like to take this
opportunity at the beginning of the school year to update faculty and
administrators on several important items:
1). If you are aware of students who are planning to go abroad for
academic purposes other than through UGA faculty-led study abroad
programs, please note that they must see us in OIE at least several
weeks prior to departure.
Students receiving UGA credit, such as via independent study, will need
study abroad insurance coverage. Students going on non-UGA programs
offering academic credit will need to plan for the transfer of credit
and disbursement of financial aid. And in all cases, we can provide
students with important pre-departure information.
2). All international study, work, and travel by UGA students for which
any placements or logistical arrangements are made by UGA faculty or
staff must receive approval from the Office of International Education.
Such activities can range from a traditional study abroad program
involving a group of UGA students going abroad with a professor to
independent research or internships conducted abroad by one or more
undergraduate or graduate students, arranged by a UGA professor.
For more information, proposal forms, and deadlines visit:
http://www.uga.edu/oie/frdevsaprog.htm
3). Similarly, faculty member who are traveling abroad and may develop
collaborative relationships with foreign institutions, should contact
OIE early in the process. Exchange relationships and other international
agreements with foreign institutions must be approved by and coordinated
through OIE; please see
http://www.uga.edu/oie/frexchange.htm
and work with OIE from the very beginning of the collaboration and
exchange process.
4). UGA study abroad programs cannot be conducted in countries
currently under US State Department Travel warning. For more
information, visit:
http://www.travel.state.gov/
5). Study abroad advisors (professional staff) and peer advisors
(returned students) are always available to speak to classes, student
groups, faculty meetings, etc. about the many study abroad-related
options (both resident and transfer credit) available to UGA students.
Additionally, the Study Abroad office offers training sessions for
faculty and staff (through Training & Development) on various topics
related to the administration of study abroad and exchange programs.
To arrange a speaker to a student or faculty group, contact Julie
Escobedo at escobedo@Uga.edu.
