Hi, folks, Earl Horn and I birded a few locations in southern Burke &
Washington Cos. searching for shorebirds on Sunday afternoon. One of the
highlights was watching a young Peregrine take a Black Tern in Burke Co.,
then dine on it in middle of a field. Here are some of the other
highlights:
Ring-necked Duck: 1 female, Burke Co.
Pied-billed Grebe: 2, Burke Co.
White Ibis: 1 imm., Burke Co.
Bald Eagle: 1 imm., Burke Co.
Osprey: 1, Burke Co.
Northern Harrier: 3, Burke Co.
Peregrine Falcon: at least 1; we observed a young Peregrine 3 times over a
couple of hours but each time (except the last, the Black Tern incident) the
bird seemed to disappear in the distance.
Black Tern: 5, then 4, Burke Co.
Caspian Tern: 3, Burke Co.
Fish Crow: one flock of about 300 birds, Burke Co.
Bobolink: 3, Burke Co.
Shorebirds:
American Golden-Plover: 2, Burke Co.
Killdeer: 20, Burke Co.; 10, Jennings Turf, Washington Co.
Ruddy Turnstone: 1 ad., Burke Co.
Pectoral Sandpiper: 1, Burke Co.; 3, Jennings Turf, Washington Co.
Buff-breasted Sandpiper: 1, Jennings Turf, Washington Co.
Wilson's Snipe: 14, Jennings Turf, Washington Co.
Take care,
Jim Flynn
