Brighter red and orange are not rare colors among Haliotidae .
I am not aware of any sure way to detect artificial coloration other than skilled hunch ;-) but so far I have not seen "doctored" Haliotis specimens and I am not at all sure that their shell and mother-of-pearl would resist heating...

Hi All,
I've recently purchased some haliotis over the internet. Could any of you tell me how to detect artificial coloration? Some of them were brighter orange or red than I thought natural.
Thanks,
