Subject: Reminder - last week for 2008 SAS-L award nominations
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Please don't forget to nominate deserving SAS-Lers for our annual awards. The deadline is JANUARY 22 (next Tuesday).

In particular, we need nominations for deserving SAS Institute tech support staff for the SPORTY (see below). If you don't personally work with tech support, please consider checking with those at your site who do, to see if they can identify any deserving candidates.

TO: All SAS-L participants FROM: SAS-L BOF Planning Committee (members listed at bottom) USBJECT: 2008 SAS-L awards and BOF -- open for nominations

2008 -- a year of change. The first outdoor National Hockey League game played in the United States. A brand-new version of SAS. The election of a new U.S. president. The first World Series victory for the Philadelphia Phillies since 1980 (OK, that may turn out to be a little optimistic -- but what's a new year for anyway?)

One thing that WON'T change -- we are once again conducting the annual SAS-L awards, and you may now submit your nominations!

You have until JANUARY 22 to get your nominations in. We need your nominations for:

"Most Valuable SAS-Ler" (MVS) "SAS-L Rookie of the Year" (SASLROY) "SAS Institute Programming Omnibus Resource of the Year" (SPORTY)

Courtesy of Larry Hoyle, you can nominate (and later vote for) deserving candidates at: http://ires.ku.edu/~ipsr/SGF2008/saslbof.htm

Please include a short testimonial for your nominee (you will have the choice of remaining anonymous if you desire). A description of each award is provided later in this message. If someone else beat you to the punch by nominating your favorite candidate, you may still add your own words of praise. These testimonials will be made available on the web site once the voting period starts.

As always, the winners will be announced and recognized at the annual SAS-L BOF (Birds of a Feather) get-together, held at SAS Global Forum (AKA the

conference formerly known as SUGI). This year's meeting is scheduled for Monday evening, March 17:

What: SAS Global Forum 2008 SAS-L BOF When: Monday, March 17, 2008 Where: Convention Center, room 212 Time: 7:00 - 8:00 pm

Keep an eye on SAS-L for more info.

Now for the award details ...

"Most Valuable SAS-Ler" (MVS)

Nominees should be people whom you feel have contributed most significantly OVER THE LAST YEAR to this list. Certainly there are MANY MANY MANY people who are very valuable contributors to the list, but only the most outstanding will qualify for MVS. This year we will be recognizing one or more winners, depending on the distribution of votes, and a scad of runners-up. What's a scad? Easy. All nominees make up the scad, and will be duly recognized.

Note that current members of the SAS-L Hall of Fame (David Cassell, Peter Crawford, Richard DeVenezia, Paul Dorfman, Toby Dunn, Ron Fehd, Dale McLerran, Howard Schreier, Ian Whitlock) are not eligible for nomination as the MVS, in order to recognize some different people each year. If any former MVS winners also finish among the top vote-getters this year, they will be inducted into the (drum roll please) SAS-L Hall of Fame.

"SAS-L Rookie of the Year" (SASLROY)

SAS-L Rookie of the Year, or SASLROY ("SAS El Roy") nominations are for a person you recognize as making a significant contribution to discussion on SAS-L who is new to SAS-L. This may have been by asking a thought provoking "newbie" question, starting a thread by providing a partial or "not exactly right" answer, or answering in a way that made us take a second look at how we approach problem solving in SAS. Someone who got us all straining those little grey cells to come up with a more "exactly right" answer. Sometimes these folks get us thinking just by asking "why not?"

"SAS Institute Programming Omnibus Resource of the Year" (SPORTY)

The "SAS Institute Programming Omnibus Resource of the Year" (SPORTY) award is for the SAS Institute staff person who has helped you the most with technical support. This is an opportunity for members of SAS-L to formally recognize outstanding work of the SAS Institute staff in this role, by submitting comments about that special someone at SAS Institute.

Don't forget, we need to receive all nominations by
