Subject: Metadata Server on x64: Windows or Solaris?

We have a SAS 9.1.3. Enterprise Intelligence Platform (EIP) with Data Integration (DI) Server, Enterprise BI Server and Intelligent Storage (no solutions). We are planning on using the following Sun servers for the following SAS tiers: Sun Fire E20K Server SPARC (http://www.sun.com/servers/highend/ sunfire_e20k/) - Compute Tier (DI + BI + SPDS + LSF) {Solaris 10} Sun Fire T2000 Server SPARC (http://www.sun.com/servers/coolthreads/ t2000/) - Mid/Web Tier (SAS WIK + WebSphere + Xythos + Postgres) {Solaris 10} Sun Fire X4600 Server AMD Opteron X64 (http://www.sun.com/servers/x64/ x4600/) - Metadata Server {Solaris 10 or Windows 2003 R2 32-bit}

What are the differences (pros and cons) of running the Metadata Server on Solaris 10 (64-bit) versus Windows 2003 R2 (32-bit) on the X4600?

Obviously the 32-bit vs. 64-bit is the most visible. We've configured both and they seem to be working fine with the tests we done, although we did not put them under a lot of stress.

The Windows installation was easier because you don't have to do the SET UID procedure with the root user, but the Solaris default configuration seems to be more secure.

We will most probably use host authentication on either Solaris and Windows because our users are not on one network domain and we have administrator skills on both operating systems.

On one side we want to opt for Windows because it is more user friendly but on the other side it makes sense to go for Solaris because of the 64-bit.

Does anybody know when SAS is planning to support the Metadata Server on 64-bit x64 Windows? Currently it looks like only SAS Foundation on SAS 9.2 is supported on 64-bit x64 Windows.

Thanks

Anton
