I spent the morning at KMT before heading up to the Bartow County Loop. Highlights include:
KENNESAW MOUNTAIN 9/22/08 - 7:45-11:15am; cool, clear, light breeze:
-Red-tailed hawk - 1 (fly-over)
-Ruby-throated hummingbird - 2
-Chimney swift - 6
-Eastern wood pewee - 3
-Eastern phoebe - 2
-Yellow-throated vireo - 3
-Red-eyed vireo - 3
-White-eyed vireo - 2
-White-breasted nuthatch - 2
-Swainson's thrush - 5 (all around the bottom parking lot)
-Hermit thrush - 1
-Northen parula - 1
-Blue-winged warbler - 2
-Tennessee warbler - 2
-Chestnut-sided warbler - 1
-Blackburnian warbler - 12 (Most of these were observed in a single-species flock of BLBW. At
one point, there were 7 individuals in the same tree)
-Black-throated green warbler - 1
-Pine Warbler - 2
-American Redstart - 1
-Summer tanager - 3
-Scarlet tanager - 10
BARTOW COUNTY LOOP: Unusually barren today on Brandon Farm Road and Taff Road:
-Least sandpiper - 16
-Pectoral sandpiper - 2
-Lesser yellowlegs - 2
Thankfully, Cartersville West Industrial sod farm again offered good looks at AMERICAN-GOLDEN
PLOVER (3). Two of these birds are in near-perfect alternate plumage; the third individual is
almost completely molted into basic plumage. When viewed from the shoulder of the closed
highway, they were foraging beyond the watering boom. However, the best views were from the
road (signed as "Riverside Dr") perpendicular to the highway. The birds were closer to this road
than they have been during recent observations - near the lumpy, plowed section of dirt.
