Reading Eagle-Eyed McShane's post about the Franklin's Gull at WPD on
Sunday, I decided to drive down yesterday and check it out. Plenty of
Forster's Terns, Ring-billed Gulls, a lone Herring Gull and many Double-
crested Cormorants greeted us but no Franklin's Gull was to be found.
However, the day was not lost as 3 COMMON LOONS were calling as a few large
rafts of ducks floated along in sheer bliss on the lake. One of the rafts
included at least a dozen REDHEADS, one male and three female BUFFLEHEADS,
four GADWALL, a few AMERICAN WIGEON and NORTHERN SHOVELERS, and numerous
Mallard, Ring-necked Duck, and Lesser Scaup. A BALD EAGLE occasionally
circled the lake, spooking the ducks into a flight of frenzy - but then
they would settle down to ride the wave action once again as it bobbed them
up and down across the lake. A great fall day for birding.
