Hi, folks, just a few notes from a rather quiet day of looking for waterfowl
in northwest GA. I started the day along Goose Island Rd., Gilmer Co., then
headed to Lake Blue Ridge Marina, then Carters Lake (where I birded some
with Rachel Cass, Ken Blankenship & Nathan Farnau), then to some of the
ponds and lakes in Murray and Whitfield Cos.
Snow Goose: 5 (3 Snows, 1 Blue, 1 Blue x Snow), Carters Lake Re-regulation
Dam (flyovers)
Wood Duck: 1, Goose Island Lake, Gilmer Co.
Ring-necked Duck: 17, Goose Island Lake
Bufflehead: 1, Goose Island Lake; 20, Lake Blue Ridge Marina, Fannin Co.; 3,
Lake Kathy, Whitfield Co.
Hooded Merganser: 9, Goose Island Lake
Ruddy Duck: 5, Lake Kathy
Common Loon: 3, Lake Blue Ridge Marina (no doubt they decided to show up the
day after Tom Stryker called them out for their seasonal tardiness)
Double-crested Cormorant: 1, Carters Lake Re-regulation Dam
Horned Grebe: 1, Carters Lake Re-regulation Dam
Bald Eagle: 1 adult, Lake Blue Ridge Marina
American Coot: 125, Lake Blue Ridge Marina; also scattered singles at
Carters Lake
Ring-billed Gull: 7, Lake Blue Ridge Marina; 25, Ellijay Wal-mart (flyovers)
Loggerhead Shrike: 1, Fagala Rd., Murray Co.
Pine Siskin: 2, Goose Island Lake; 2, Ellijay River@Goose Island Rd.; +/-5,
Carters Lake Re-regulation Dam; 30, GA 136@railroad tracks near
Gordon/Murray Co. line.
Goose Island Lake is located near Cherry Log, Delorme p14 D-3. Lake Kathy
is located north of Dalton, DeLorme p13 C-7. Lake Blue Ridge Marina is the
left boat ramp symbol in the DeLorme p14 C-4 grid.
It was a little on the brisk side today and the snow atop Grassy Mountain
north east of Chatsworth provided a nice touch.
