I have opened both V6 (*.sd2) and V7+ (*.sas7bdat) files using SAS Universal Viewer. Note: the filter function seems to be improved in the SAS Universal Viewer compared to the older SAS System Viewer application, although I have not done enough testing to really know how it does with some of those filters which compare a variable with missing values.

Also, in my testing, I have found what appears to be a problem with the performance option that controls splitting a data set into pages. Specifically, if I uncheck the box "Break large data sets into pages", I would expect that I would get the entire data set on a single "page". In fact, this check box does not seem to control any function with respect to whether pages of a specified number of observations are or are not presented to the user. Rather, if I want all of the data on one page, then I have to specify a page size at least as large as the number of observations in the data set.
