Subject: Odd Custom Tables 17.0 behavior
Content-type: text/html; charset=US-ASCII

Hi all --

I'm trying to build a table using the Custom Tables module, v. 17.0. I have a 5-point Likert-type item and I'm crossing it with a Pre/Post variable. All variables are listed in the database with a nominal level of measurement, and Pre/Post is currently entered as a string variable.

I want a table that looks like this:

Pre Post
Count Row% Count Row%
SA
A
N
SD

When I try to make a table using Custom Tables, I get this:

Pre Post Pre Post
Count Row% Count Row% Count Row% Count Row%
SA
A
N
D
SD

The first set of Pre and Post columns have zero values all the way down. The second set of Pre and Post columns have the real values. When I run a frequencies or cross-tabs on my pre/post variable, there are only 2 values that come up.

Now, if I recode Pre/Post into a Scale-level variable, change the level to nominal in the custom tables drop-down box, and then build the table, it comes out correctly.

Can anyone explain why this might be happening?

Thanks!

Jenenne A.
