Subject: Panol Mountain, 9/20/09 - Merlin, 1000 swifts
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hi folks,

I am quite relieved to report that we were able to band without getting rained on today! I checked weather.com about 6 times between 9pm and 5am.

Check out the number of phoebes and swifts we had, plus the Merlin. Tracey and I also had one in Lamar on Thursday - seems they are all over the state right now!

The Merlin flew into Dekalb, so that is 3 counties for this bird in 4 days!

Thanks to Bill Boyd for doing half of the swift counting, after my neck and eyes got sore!

Charlie Muise Lamar County

Location: Panola Mountain SP, Rockdale County Observation date: 9/20/09 Notes: The swifts were quite a spectacle! Not sure where these bunches of phoebes keep coming from. The merlin was exciting! Number of species: 40

Canada Goose 30 Wild Turkey 4 Great Blue Heron 1 Great Egret 1 Black Vulture 60 very low number for this area. Turkey Vulture 3 Red-shouldered Hawk 2 Red-tailed Hawk 1 Merlin 1 One medium-large, dark, streaky falcon zipped with powerful flight in a very straight line right over the banding station. Rock Pigeon 2 Mourning Dove 50 Great Horned Owl 1 Chimney Swift 1103 WOW! After several of us noticed that there were a bunch of swifts flying very straight in the same direction (and silently) we began to count, taking shifts. Only 3 of these birds chattered at all, and they all went the same direction. I don't know how many passed before we began to count. Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Belted Kingfisher 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 2 Downy Woodpecker 1 Pileated Woodpecker 1 Eastern Phoebe 25 Banded 16 hatch-year bird! Also handled 2 recaptures. Eastern Kingbird 12 Flying about in groups of 6 - 12. Likely an under-count White-eyed Vireo 1 American Crow 2 Fish Crow 1 crow sp. 32 Probably mostly fish Barn Swallow 1 Carolina Wren 2 Banded one bird House Wren 1 Eastern Bluebird 5 As I removed 2 chicks from a net, dad and mom dive-bombed me, until dad also got caught. Summer Tanager 1 Eastern Towhee 1 Field Sparrow 2 Song Sparrow 1 Banded one bird. Northern Cardinal 2 Blue Grosbeak 6 Banded 2 hatch-year birds. Indigo Bunting 10 Banded 2 hatch-year birds.
