As I commuicated to David offline, individual shells from populatios of Anomia simplex in the western part of Long Island (Nassau County, Brooklyn) are generally not very colorful. On the other hand, further east, particularly on the north shore of the south fork of Long Island at places like North Sea, Towd Point, North Haven, and also near Orient Point, the shells are much more colorful, and pairs wash up by the thousands in some places, so the hold of the byssus on the substrate is not absolutely powerful. These eastern populations have lots of colorful shells, including a lot of what I call "creamsicle-pop " orange ones. This geographic variability supports what Paul said, may just be genetic.

By the way for anybody interested in Long Island shells, another specimen of Tagelus divisus was found in Shinnecock Bay on Sunday. That is only the 5th specimen I am aware of since about 1975. This shell has an interesting distribution, rare in NY and also I believe rare in New Jersey, but increasingly common to the north, and to the south.
