ASSOCIATE SERVICE FELLOW

Position and Organization: The Ambulatory and Hospital Care Statistics
Branch, Division of Health Care Statistics, National Center for Health
Statistics (NCHS), located in Hyattsville, MD, is seeking a full-time
Associate Service Fellow. The mission of NCHS, as the nation's
principal health statistical agency, is to compile accurate, relevant,
and timely statistical information to guide actions and policies that
improve the nation's health. The Branch conducts
nationally-representative surveys of hospital inpatient, emergency, and
outpatient departments; ambulatory surgery centers; and office-based
physicians. These surveys collect data about clinicians and
organizations, their patients, and management of patients' conditions.
Policymakers and researchers use the data to analyze patterns and
management of specific conditions, quality of care and disparities among
populations, and effects of policy changes.
Fellowship Overview: The Fellow will collaborate on the development and
implementation of several supplements to the National Ambulatory Medical
Care Survey (NAMCS) and the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care
Survey (NHAMCS). One supplement will explore physician practices
regarding the diagnosis and management of asthma and opinions regarding
management guidelines; another will obtain clinical data on
colonoscopies, and the relationship between provider characteristics and
procedures that are performed. Primary responsibilities will include
collaborating on the design of data collection instruments and
procedures, evaluating pretest results, and analyzing survey data.
Qualifications: Applicants should have a master's degree or higher in
health services research, statistics, survey methods, epidemiology,
medical informatics, or a related social science or health field.
Applicants should have strong analytical, writing, and interpersonal
skills. In addition, applicants should have experience working with
national surveys, especially surveys of establishments. Skill in using
SAS, STATA, SUDAAN, or other statistical software for complex survey
data is expected. This opportunity is open to all United States
citizens and legal permanent residents with a work authorization.

Terms of Appointment: The Fellow will be offered an initial 24-month,
full-time appointment, which may be extended by mutual agreement. An
initial salary of $51,630-$81,204 will be offered, based on education
and experience. Fellows are eligible for sick leave, annual leave,
thrift savings (401(k) equivalent), and health and life insurance. A
flexible work schedule may be arranged. Also available is free on-site
parking or a transportation subsidy for using the nearby metro area
subway.
