Did you save the dataset before closing SPSS? If not, you got the old version of the file when you re-opened

Hi, I thought that if I used a select if statement WITHOUT "temporary" preceding it that the selection would be permanent. I used the following syntax Select if (SIWkRating LE 5) AND (MD_SI_C LE 5) and did a crosstabs which showed I should have an n of 346. When I ran a frequency for MD_SI_C the total was indeed 346. I closed SPSS and have now reopened it and reran the frequency for MD_SI_C and the total n is back to 482, the entire dataset. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Jan
