Thanks to Sheila for posting the update on the death of "yet another" crane. I was about to post it when I read my emails and saw her report.

Our local newspaper here in Rome - Rome News Tribune- and the Assistant Editor Doug Walker has been following the Whooping Cranes in nearby Lake Weiss and has pictures of the cranes two days before their death. The cranes that were shot were identified in Dougs pictures by their leg bands. When Operating Migration were leading the cranes to Florida and were using their previous route through North Georgia and had a stop over in Plainville Georgia Doug (keeping the location a secret) would broadcast live from the scene when the cranes were leaving on the rest of their journey to Florida. (At that time Doug was with the radio  station WRGA). He has always had a great interest in the Whooping Cranes and also eagles.  When Doug made the pictures of the Whooping Cranes in Alabama  and saw for himself the cranes in the wild - he was so excited to see what had been accomplished in Operation Migration's efforts and I was so pleased that I also could be a part of this also. When I contacted him to tell him of the death of the first Lake Weiss crane he was devasted.

You can go to Rome News Tribune web site - search  Whooping cranes and get the previous articles and pictures of the cranes.
