Hi, folks, I spent some time birding lake access points from Strom Thurmond Dam north to Hart State Park Sunday, mainly looking for waterfowl. The balmy morning temperatures prior to sunrise prompted me to listen for displaying woodcock in Wilkes Co. on my way to Clarks Hill Lake. Stops after dawn included Cherokee Rec Area (Lincoln Co., GA 47 @ Clarks Hill Lake), Clarks Hill Dam (above & below the dam), Bussey Pt. (Lincoln Co., off of GA 220 Spur), Elijah Clark SP, Richard B Russell Dam, Hartwell Dam & Hart SP. I had originally intended to bird the Quail Demonstration Area adjacent to Strom Thurmond Dam, but a prescribed burn made it difficult to see (and breathe).

Several Canvasbacks, a couple of Common Goldeneyes & a White-winged Scoter headlined a modest number of ducks seen, but based on the constant distant barrage of shotgun fire most of the morning, there were lots more somewhere. Here are the highlights for the day:

Ducks: ------ Gadwall: 1, Hartwell Dam American Wigeon: 3 (2 males, 1 female), Hartwell Dam Mallard: 2, Clarks Hill Lake@GA 47, Columbia Co.; 8, Soap Creek@GA 220, Lincoln Co. Canvasback: 3 (1 male, 2 females), Cherokee RA; 1 male, Elijah Clark SP Ring-necked Duck: 1, Elijah Clark SP Lesser Scaup: 1, Cherokee RA; 7, Clarks Hill Lake@GA 47, Columbia Co.; 34, Bussey Pt. White-winged Scoter: 1 female/imm; Richard B. Russell Dam Bufflehead: 8, Clarks Hill Dam; 10, Elijah Clark SP Common Goldeneye: 1 male, Bussey Pt.; 1 female, Elijah Clark SP Hooded Merganser: 1 male, Cherokee RA Ruddy Duck: 7, Cherokee RA; 18, Bussey Pt.

Common Loon: small numbers at many locations; most=17 @ Cherokee RA

Horned Grebe: 24, Bussey Pt.; 7, Richard B. Russell Dam

American Coot: several small concentrations at different locations; largest was 95 @ Bussey Pt.

American Woodcock: 3, Smyrna Church Rd., Wilkes Co.; 1, Rudeseal Rd., Habersham Co. (on the way home)

Bonaparte's Gull: 7, Elijah Clark SP; sadly, the only place I saw this species

Ring-billed Gull: small numbers at many locations, but there was a flock of about 800 swirling below S Thrumond Dam, SC/GA

Herring Gull: 3 imms, below S Thrumond Dam, SC/GA

Red-breasted Nuthatch: 1, West Bank Park (Clarks Hill Lake), Columbia Co.

Brown Creeper: 1, West Bank Park; 1, Bussey Pt.

Dark-eyed Junco: 12, West Bank Park

Purple Finch: 1, Clarks Hill Lake@GA 47; 4 females/imms, West Bank Park

Take care.
