Fasciolaria lilium is generally restricted to the Yucatan in the Gulf of Mexico. F. hunteria is less restricted and is also found on both coasts of Florida. The simplest method to distinguish them is the half whorl of axial ridges after about 1 1/2 whorls of protoconch on F. lilium; F hunteria has no obvious sculpture. Also there are basically two colored lines on the upper whorls of F. hunteria and three on F. lilium. There is no consensus as to the use of hunteria as a species or subspecies epithet.
