I've always had best luck using binary mode transfer in FTP for moving SPSS portable files around. Sometimes the leading lines of the file get corrupted. In these cases I've sometimes been able to see which lines are correct by producing and listing out a portable file on the receiving system, then have patched up the bad file by removing the corrupted lines and replacing them with the good stuff made on that system (this method was shown to me by Bruce Peterson).
