When SAS/PC was released, it became a "market-killer",
even without the need for lawyers, and the Bass System, which ran on PCs,
just withered away.

| I recall recently a note from Jeff Bass indicating the demise of
| the BASS system - it was a type of SAS-Lite. Does anybody know
| if it is still available in any form - perhaps shareware?
|
| The dilemma I am facing is that there is a project being under development
| that is going to be used both in the US and in 3rd world countries. Obviously
| the poorer countries don't have access to a sophisticated (and expensive)
| package like SAS. It would be great if a cheaper method was available
| for simple SAS-like tasks and yet could be simply converted for use in SAS
| for more complex analysis.

| In Sept '91, I reported on SAS-L that the BASS Institute had sent out post
| cards to customers announcing the demise of the the product. I don't know
| what Jeff Bass is doing these days, but he was at SUGI 17, so is obviously
| still involved somehow.

| Jeff is now (happily) marketing manager at AMGEN corp, a biotech
| pharmaceutical company. He and his family have moved out to California.
| BASS is no longer being supported and (I believe) can no longer be
| purchased.
