Brian,

What about using a code for each month (1-6) and creating one data file. You could then use the select command to isolate one month at a time and also have totals for all six months (I find this very easy to do in SPSSwin and have used similar codings to save doing the 700 variables again and again. It also saves doing the merge.

Month VAR1 VAR2 VAR3 ... VA700

1 1 2 3 1 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 1 1 2 3 ...
