   a)  Use RECODE to convert long names into short ones in an A8 variable,
   and at the same time, code the original values as Value Labels.  It
   appears AUTORECODE does this, but not plain RECODE.
 
Actually RECODE *can* handle long strings.  This will probably fix
your problem.
