Subject: Re: SAS App and Oracle Warehouse
Robert,
I don't have any personal experience with this, but there were a number of
excellent papers presented at this year's SUGI conference that touch on this
topic. In addition to the papers in the Data Warehousing section, I would also
take a look at one called "Replacing Oracle with the SAS Scalable Performance
Data Server: Improved Performance, Functionality and Efficiency", by Ami Ghosh
of SAS Institute and Jay Stevens of Prudential Bank. (You can probably guess
their conclusions from the title!) The SUGI Proceedings are available in either
printed format or CD-ROM from SAS Institute Publications.

<<original question>>
Our hospital has been using SAS to develop EIS and AF applications to review
patient and financial information. We have two developers and are now at a
point where a third person could come in and take care of the data warehousing
needs (loading, cleaning, prepping for application use). We have Oracle
experience, and that has been the choice thus far for developing the data
warehouse, currently all data is in SAS datasets.
We are looking for input from both sides: using SAS as an application and data
warehouse storage device; or SAS applications with an Oracle warehouse.
Part of my concern is the knowledge needed to keep up with a second software
package (Oracle) as well as the expense. We are not using the SAS Data
Warehouse Administrator. We are using 6.12 on an NT server, Oracle is
currently in use on this server as well.
Feel free to post to me directly (muznrv@integris-health.com, or to the list.
Thanks,
RVM
