Since this is the SPSSX-L list and/or NG, might I offer the suggestion that if one is interested in software concerning this matter, one could also look into the TRENDS module from SPSS. There are much more diverse software packages offered on Time Series Analysis, but this is the one that is offered by SPSS and it might be enough for your needs.

You haven't provided much detail, but if you're talking about observations at regular points in time that exhibit seasonal cycles etc., then the operative phrase is Time Series Analysis. There are numerous books on the subject, but the small Sage Publications book is a start. If you're looking for software, you could look at the SAS Time Series module.
