It appears you've hit a known bug affecting Releases 8.0 and 8.0.1. If you
run CROSSTABS with multiple tables in one run (i.e., you have two or more
row or column variables in the dialog) and you have a long string variable,
you get wrong counts. This should be fixed in 8.0.2. Workarounds include
running one table at a time and changing the long string to a shorter one or
numeric. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Contrary to previous broadcast, I found I did have a journal and
could
reproduce the error on a much reduced datafile. In case it is
relevant,
the data were input to Excel 5, saved as Excel 4, imported, saved as
.SAV . However, the .SAV file was then cut down and saved as SPSS
portable, but still shows the same error.
It appears that if I ask for a single Xtabs table, I get a sensible
result (though I haven't independently checked it is "correct"), but
when
I ask for two tables in one command I get total rubbish. Perhaps
SPSS
now needs a pop-up box saying, "I accept now that the answers I gave
when
you last issued this command were not entirely appropriate."
