A research associate investigated this recently (March 1998)
and sent me the following info:
HLM software has been developed by Bryk, Raudenbush, and
Congdon and is distributed by Scientific Software
(www.ssicentral.com) distributes HLM software for about
$430USD. They have a demo version on their website that you
can try out.
MLN was developed by Harvey Goldstein, et. al. is apparently
more flexible but some feel is more unwieldy to pick up at
first. Goldstein has a book published in 1995 that explains
some of the advantages in the extensions of basic growth
models. It runs around $860USD. General info can be found at
www.medent.umontreal.ca.
Other programs include BUGS, MIXREG, VARCL, and MLA but
these first two are widely used and widely applicable.
The above are specific packages for HLM purposes. I also
have seen LISREL sofware used for growth curve models, and
also Proc Mixed in SAS can be used to run HLM models.
